Blanco County Master Gardeners present FireWise Many of us have grown up in urban environments where fire hydrants, police and hospitals were taken for granted. They were right outside of our door and emergency services were there in minutes. As beautiful and as remote an environment as we are in Johnson City and surrounding Blanco County, we all live in what is called the Urban Wildland Interface (UWI). In our area, forest fires are real and will happen. In Blanco County alone in 2022 there were a total of 4500 acres that had fire events, 50% caused by people. As landowners, home and business owners we should be proud of what a special place we have. Together we can make a difference by doing everything in our power to protect the safety of our family, our homes and our community. On behalf of the Blanco County Master Gardeners, Master Gardeners we are pleased to present the FireWise USA program. On February 27th, we will be offering an education and social event so that you can be part of the plan. Firewise USA is a structured program under the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The national Firewise USA® recognition program provides a collaborative framework to help neighbors get organized, find direction, and take action to increase the ignition resistance of our homes and community and to reduce wildfire risks at the local level. Any community that meets a set of voluntary criteria on an annual basis and retains an “In Good Standing Status” may identify itself as being a Firewise® Site. In Blanco County we have three large subdivisions that have this status and we seek to increase the number of people, HOA's and communities that have this recognition.
