HORSES & HORSEBACK RIDING
IN THE TEXAS HILL COUNTRY

Deanna and Tom Stamp2
This page is all about the adventure of horseback riding in the Hill Country.

On this page we present all those facilities we have experienced or been told about, from training to boarding and livery.

In addition, there are many private ranches that welcome horseback riding on their land in the Hill Country, but we do not yet have listings for them.

There is a lot of overlap in terms of what these facilities have or allow. There are no tight categories to classify these facilities, so be sure to look through all the listings and compare them.

Be sure to check out our focus page on historic dance halls that favor Country Western music, at:

QUICK INDEX TO CATEGORIES (pointerclick choice)

HORSE CAMPS IN THE TEXAS HILL COUNTRY

Cowboy on fence Horse Camps are facilities where you can bring you own horse to ride, and typically to camp nightly. Often these facilities are available at the many dude ranches listed further below and also on a private ranch basis.

Some folks think of camps as children's day or week programs with scheduled horse activities. Some think of them as training clinics or camps. However, for this section of the Portal, we are thinking a "horse camp" is where you make your own camp, with a campfire, a few companions, and roughin' it to some degree, all on your own. No class, no program, no schedule. Pack your own gear on your own horse. More like the old days plus some transportation and maybe some sleeping conveniences.

The things we look for in these horse camp facilities are:
  • How many miles of trails can be accessed?
  • Type of trail terrain?
  • Degree of riding difficulty and experience needed?
  • What kind of stalls are available if we can bring our own horses?
  • Can we bring and leave our own camper trailer/hauler/RV, and is there water, sewer and electric hookup?
In the trail profiles below, we use the following symbols regarding minimum skill level needed (just our opinion): I=Intermediate, E=expert

We use the following symbols to describe the type of trail terrain:
S=Steep; R=Rocky; W=Water Crossings

Many places require negative Coggins, so be sure to bring them.

Some horse camps also rent horses.

PUBLIC PARKS THAT ALLOW HORSE RIDING
IN THE TEXAS HILL COUNTRY

Horses Many of our national, state and local parks in the Texas Hill Country allow horse riding in their parks, and some have extensive equestrian-friendly trails and horse camp facilities. None have horse rentals, but several have nearby concessionaires who provide rentals. See our comprehensive presentation of these parks at Parks.

In particular, the following are noted for horse riding facilities:
  • Cedar Point Primitive Area (LCRA park on Lake Buchanan)
  • Grelle Recreation Area (LCRA park on Lake Travis near Spicewood)
  • Guadalupe River State Park (near Bulverde & Boerne), day-use only trails
  • Harrison Ranch Park (city park in Dripping Springs, dswildwestfest.com)
  • Hill Country State Natural Area (TSP near Bandera. Overnight & day-use trails. See great TWPWD video below)
  • Longhorn Caverns Park: Between Burnet and Kingsland, near Inks Lake
  • Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area (LCRA park on Lake Travis)
  • Pace Bend Park (aka Paleface, on Lake Travis)
  • Pedernales Falls State Park (on Pedernales River near Johnson City). A 10 mile rugged trail winds up and down over the hillsides through the park. Riders should be experienced, as the trail is very rocky and has some steep slopes. Horses should have shoes. There is a water trough at the trailer parking area and an additional trough at the midway point on the trail. At this time, there are no rental horses available near the park. The park has a new Group Equestrian Camp available for overnight use.
  • Shaffer Bend Recreational Area (LCRA park on Lake Travis)
  • Turkey Bend Recreation Area (LCRA park on Lake Travis)
See TPWD Video on horseback riding & camping at Hill Country State Natural Area:

See TPWD Horseback Riding page with full details on day-use only parks, day-use & overnight parks, and documentation required for bringing a horse to a state park: TPWD
