CALENDAR OF
RODEO & FAIR EVENTS
IN THE TEXAS HILL COUNTRY

Talking 'bout competition, Texas rodeos are packed with thrilling events and rich traditions! Here’s what you can typically expect:

Roughstock Events: These are high-adrenaline competitions where cowboys and cowgirls try to stay on bucking animals for 8 seconds:
    • Bull Riding: One of the most dangerous rodeo events, where riders attempt to stay on a bucking bull.
    • Bareback Riding: Riders hold onto a leather rigging while trying to stay on a bucking horse.
    • Saddle Bronc Riding: A classic rodeo event where riders use a thick rein to control a bucking horse.

Timed Events: These competitions focus on speed and precision:
    • Steer Wrestling: Also called "bulldogging," where a cowboy jumps off his horse to wrestle a steer to the ground.
    • Team Roping: Two riders work together to rope a steer—one ropes the head, the other ropes the hind legs.
    • Tie-Down Roping: A cowboy ropes a calf, dismounts, and ties its legs as quickly as possible.
    • Barrel Racing: A fast-paced event where riders maneuver their horses around three barrels in a cloverleaf pattern.

Entertainment & Attractions:
    • Live Music: Country and Western performances, sometimes featuring big-name artists.
    • Carnival Rides & Games: Family-friendly fun with Ferris wheels, games, and food vendors.
    • Mutton Bustin: A kids' event where young riders try to stay on a sheep for as long as possible.
    • Rodeo Queens & Pageants: Competitions celebrating rodeo culture and leadership.

Livestock Shows & Exhibitions: Many rodeos also feature cattle auctions, horse shows and agricultural exhibits.

Texas rodeos are more than just competitions, they are a "cultural celebration" of cowboy heritage! Enjoy!

Note that in the US, professional rodeos are governed and sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA). The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) is an international professional bull riding organization based in Fort Worth. It is the largest bull riding league in the world, sanctioning hundreds of events yearly in US, Canada, Brazil and Australia, with 800+ memberships. The traditional season for competitive rodeo is from spring through fall. In contrast, the modern professional rodeo circuit runs longer and concludes with the PRCA National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas every December.
