Focus Topic Profile For:
TEXAS HILL COUNTRY SWIMMING HOLES
Shown below are all the places where you can go swimming or wading in a natural setting, as opposed to public, man-made swimming pools. While many are out in thte wild (no amenities, no fees), there are many spots that are at governmment-owned and commerciallly owned parks. Government parks have either free or modest access fees. Commercial parks (think RV parks) usually require overnight stsys with associated fees.
Naturally, they are all related to lakes, rivers and streams as the source of and catchment for water. Many are accessible via public parks. All of them are scenic and relaxing. But that doesn'tmean you should be oblivious to aspects of nature that might be harmful, from rapid water flow, to sharp objects, deep spots, and yes, spiders, snakes and even the bacteria level.
So be sure to take appropriate precautions. There are no lifeguards or anyone overlooking the conditions on your behalf at most all of these spots. Not even a public phone or a person who can help. You are on your own. But, enjoy what many others have experienced since the beginning of the occupation of the Texas Hill Country!
And, remember that the "conditions" include what nature provides from moment to moment, including torrential rains, strong winds, hail, and flash floods. And, drought conditions can dry up the water level enough to make it not practical to use the "hole". So, water levels (depth) can vary significantly from one visit to the next and this should be a key factor in your trip planning. With few exceptions, there are no information sources regarding current conditions.
Many of these swimming hole locations have NO amenities, meaning no bathrooms, no picnic tables, fire pits, drinkable water, concessions, etc. so plan ahead! And, rarely is there a shuttle service to take you (and all your gear) right up to the swimming hole. Think about lugging all your gear (coolers & ice, food & beverages, chairs, floatables, towels, and often much more) as you hike through to the swimming hole. So again, plan ahead!
A few of these locations include special natural attractions, including cliffs for the fearless to dive from, and a very rare waterfall.
If you are going to float downstream be sure to arrange dependable pickup for your group. A few locations have local commercial shuttle arrangements available.
Remember to leave the area at least as clean as you found it. There are no public clean up services at most of these places.
Many of these locations are at local (city, county) and state parks. We have much more detailed profiles of all parks in the Hill Country, on our Focus Topic page at Parks & Lakes. Likewise regarding some RV parks, at RV Parks
And, if you are into water recreation (tubing, kayaking, canoeing), see our Focus Topic pages: Waterfalls, and Tubing & Paddling
Be sure to inquire ahead of your trip to determine water level.l and check the weather forcast
We welcome inquiries, comments and submission of updates, additions, corrections
