Founded as Springs, the community was soon renamed Gum Springs. The first settler in the area, a Missourian named W. T. Gann, arrived in the area in 1855, but the community was established along the Berry Creek in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. A post office was established under the name of Taylor's Gin (named for leading settler Stephen Taylor) on 27 March 1888; it did not assume its current name until 21 June 1898, when local doctor William Hazelwood was able to have the community renamed for his mother-in-law. The community prospered in the early 1900s; although major fires and the early effects of the Great Depression seriously impacted the community, it reached its height in 1936, from which it has since declined.". BROWNSBORO: Kendall County. Located on River Bend Road off the highway from Comfort to Sisterdale, on north bank of the Guadalupe River. The Brownsboro Cemetery and a few houses are all that remain of Brownsboro, one of Kendall County's earliest settlements dating back to 1848. Though it had been a thriving community, a flood in the 1870's, the railroad passing it by in 1887, and another flood in 1900 led to Brownsboro's demise. The school and post office were moved to higher ground near the intersection of Hwy 473 and Old #9 in 1897, and remained there until 1944. Land was donated for a cemetery in 1870. The Comfort Heritage Foundation later acquired the cemetery, applied for and obtained a historical marker. An officially designated Texas Historical Cemetery. rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txchf/cbrown.htm

CAMP AIR: Mason County; At the junction of US-377/US-87 and FM-1222, 11 mi N of Mason. Not on current maps. Locals report: "The settlement dates from the early 1860s when there were actually two separate colonies here. One was a school community named Peter’s Prairie after Major Peters of the Texas Rangers. Peters sold hay to the cavalry at Fort Mason, the first commercial enterprise here. The original school was replaced by a rock building and that was later moved; but the community retained the name Peter’s Prairie. The second community, one half mile south, was named Bethel and finally Camp Air came to be applied to the businesses that opened alongside the Brady-Mason highway." Historical building remaining include the close General Store, and the Prairie School (now a community center. According to legend, storekeeper John Kyle whimsically chose the name since there was little else there. Over time, the three settlements became known as Air although there was never an established post office. In operation. The consolidated groups became Camp Air in the 1960s. Air had peaked in the 1940s with about 75 residents present, but from the 70s through the 80s, it had dwindled to just over 30. The rock schoolhouse has been converted into a community center and the store has been closed since the 1980s. The 1990 census reported a mere 15 residents – as did the 2000 count.

The school, named for a nearby creek, was on land donated by Henry A. Rose and served the blacklands farming area 3.5 miles northeast of New Braunfels. In 1906 a store opened near the school at the intersection of Eberling Lane and Prairie Lea Road. In 1910 Alonzo Nolte, Onr of the store, organized the Freiheit Bowling Club, which lent its name to the crossroads community. In the reorganization of Comal County schools after World War II,qv the San Geronimo School was consolidated with the Goodwin Rural High School. The crossroads on Farm Road 1101 leading to New Braunfels Municipal Airport was still known as Freiheit (German for "freedom") in 1985."

A post office called Granite was established there in 1886 with Nimrod Norton as postmaster. The post office name was changed to Granite Mountain in 1890. The Granite Mountain and Marble Falls City Railroad was chartered in October 1889 and constructed by the Austin and Northwestern Railroad Company; the new track provided easier access to the quarries by the following year. In the early 1890s Granite Mountain had a population of sixty; among the companies working in the community were the Texas Capital Granite Company, the Texas and New York Granite Company, and the Galveston Construction Company. The Granite Mountain post office was discontinued in 1911, and mail for the community was sent to Marble Falls. The number of residents was reported at twenty-five in 1933, at seventy-five in 1943, and at thirty in 1945; no population estimates were available after the 1940s."

- GRAPETOWN SCHOOL: 7325 Old San Antonio Road. Rural school built in 1884, consolidated in 1949. One of four schools which still has the original teacherage, the house where the teacher lived. This limestone two-room teacherage was built in 1887, and later a frame kitchen, storeroom, and smokehouse was erected. It was used until 1949 when Grapetown School District was consolidated with Rocky Hill School District as part of the rural school consolidation in Texas.
From Historic Schools site below: "The Grapetown community began in 1857, when Ferdinand Doebbler built a stagecoach stop at the crossing of Immigrant Road and Upper South Grape Creek. As settlers moved into the community, a need arose for a school. Mr. Doebbler bought a small stone house from James William Vance, which he donated as a schoolhouse. After the Civil War, a log school was built on the Friedrich Baag property.". See Friends Profile including town and school history and picture. HAYS, CITY OF: Hays County; N of Buda, SW of Austin, 11 mi NW of San Marcos, between Kyle and Wimberley, on FM-1626. TSHA: " . . was perhaps the most ambitious failure in Hays County history. The community was a proposed replacement for San Marcos as the county seat and was laid out in 1908 on land owned by county-center advocate Hezekiah Williams. Within two years Hays City could boast of everything-a two-story hotel, a department store, a livery stable, a lumberyard, a church, and even a weekly newspaper (the Hays City Enterprise)-except settlers. In 1909 Williams went so far as to chart a rail route from Kyle to Hays City, but the town never attracted enough settlers to take on a life of its own, nor even to open a post office. Williams's petition for an election to make Hays City the county seat apparently failed, as did eventually all of his enterprises.". Springer Mobile Small Engine Repair: 956-342-5925; 2911 RR-165. HEDWIGS HILL: S Mason County, US-87, NW of Fredericksburg, SE of Mason, 5 mi S of Art. TSHA: "(Hedwig's, Hedwig) Hill, a dispersed rural community just off US-87 . . is thought to be one of the oldest communities in the county. It was settled by the overflow of German settlers from nearby Fredericksburg, among them Christopher Voges and Louis Martin. Martin's mother and daughter were both named Hedwig, and the town is believed to have been named for them. One of the first post offices in the county opened at Hedwigs Hill in June 1858 with Louis Martin as postmaster; later his nephew, Charles Martin, became postmaster. In the late 1850s Charles Martin and his wife, Anna Henriette Mebus Martin, opened the community's first store. It was one of the best-stocked stores in the vicinity, and the Martins traded over a wide area, conducting a freighting business with San Antonio and Austin. The main shipments from Hedwigs Hill were cotton and livestock. The community store was also one of the first to begin selling barbed wire when the local ranchers began to fence the ranges in the late 1880s. A Methodist Episcopal church was established at Hedwigs Hill in 1870; at one time there were as many as three churches in the area. In the late 1800s and early 1900s the community also had a district school. With the establishment of better local roads, which facilitated travel to larger towns, Hedwigs Hill declined. Its post office closed in 1907, and its estimated population from the 1930s through the 1950s was only ten. The community had at least one store in the early 1960s, and by 1968 its reported population had grown to sixty-three. The last dwelling at the old Hedwigs Hill townsite, reportedly the home of Louis Martin, was moved to the Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock at Texas Tech University in 1971. By 1974 the reported population of the Hedwigs Hill area had grown to eighty-five, but by 1990 it had dropped to ten. The population remained the same in 2000.". Llano River Fish Camp: 1255 West Ave

OATMEAL: Burnet County (E side); Hwy 243, 6 mi SW of Bertram, and 12 mi E of Burnet by road. No Post Office. From Facebook: "Oatmeal is an unincorporated community in Burnet County, Texas, United States. It is situated along RM-243, approximately eight miles southeast of Burnet and 56 miles northwest of Austin.
History: "The area's first settlers were German families during the late 1840s. The community's name is either an alteration of a Mr. Othneil – the area's first gristmill Onr, or a supposed translation of the name Habermill (Haber being a German dialect word for Hafer, "oats"). A post office was established in 1853 under the name Oatmeal. The first schoolhouse opened in 1858, only to be replaced by a second building eleven years later. A gin built in the 1870s continued to serve as a local landmark into the early 1900s. A cemetery was deeded in 1871, although burials were recorded in the area as early as 1854. In 1936, Oatmeal had a school, two churches, and scattered dwellings. By 1990, the population was around twenty – consisting mostly of families engaged in farming and ranching. That figure remained the same in 2000.
Stringtown: Following the Civil War, a colony of freed slaves, "freedmen", settled in the eastern part of Oatmeal. The settlement, known as Stringtown, included homes, a building used as a church and school, and Burnet County's only all-black cemetery. The community of Stringtown remained in existence until the early 1920s.
Oatmeal Festival: Since 1978, the community of Oatmeal and the nearby city of Bertram have celebrated an annual Oatmeal Festival. Ken Odiorne, a local resident, started the tradition by writing to the major producers of oatmeal at the time to ask for assistance. Only one company, National Oats, responded. The Oatmeal Festival has played a significant role in the continued notoriety and existence of Oatmeal, Burnet County's second oldest community." Oatmeal is distinctively marked by a large metal cylindrical monument painted like an oatmeal container. Across the parking lot is a community center that includes a picnic pavilion." Oatmeal Community Association community center, located 5 mi S of Bertram on FM-243 and CR-336 at the big oatmeal box.
